The old and almost indestructible parquet floor in Westminster Cathedral was restored
to its former glory through thorough painstaking work. It was initiated by the Cathedral's
Appeal Fund Committee under the direction of the Duke of Norfolk.
The large surface of pitch pine blocks is one of England's most beautiful floors.
With over 250,000 pitch pine blocks it makes an impressive sight. Over 70% of the
blocks were loose which meant that they had to be removed one by one. Then each block
was dipped in adhesive and relaid exactly in its original position. The work was
undertaken whilst the cathedral was still open to a constant stream of visitors.
