This $62 million building, designed by Swiss architect, Mario Botta, opened January
18, 1995. The 225,000 square foot museum represents one of the largest, new American
art museums of the decade and the second-largest structure in the U.S. devoted to
modern art. The SFMOMA is flooded with natural light and offers generous open spaces.
A full-height central atrium court illuminated by a skylight cylinder is a key feature
of the interior space. Pacific Strong was chosen to coat the 58,000 square feet of
Maple flooring, not only for its durability but also to maintain the clean, bright
appearance of the flooring and add to the natural interior illumination of the museum.
The museum anticipates 430,000 annual visitors to the galleries. |
